Opinion: Running Point Season 2 (spoilers)

Running Point Season 2 works because it suggests that chaos isn’t just coming from the family-run pro basketball team, it is coming from the family members too.
One reason the season feels stronger is that the characters are allowed to make huge decisions. Isla (Kate Hudson) ends her engagement the day before the wedding. She is no longer willing to keep performing for everyone’s expectations. Her decision also doesn’t create huge fallout.
Season 2 highlights how dysfunctional the Gordon family is, but also how deeply tied they are to each other. This includes the role played by the family’s newest addition, Jackie (Fabrizio Guido). The (covert) sibling power struggle is the engine of this season. The older brother Cam (Justin Theroux) wanting control of the organisation an planning to undermine Isla creates tension.
Another reason Season 2 works is the friendship drama. The friendship between Isla and Ali (Brenda Song) feels rocky in a believable way. People are constantly choosing between career survival and emotional loyalty. The show understands that friendships inside high-pressure environments are not always easy.
Outside of all of that, I had forgotten how funny Running Point is. I knew I was looking forward to season 2 for a reason. With Mindy Kaling behind the writing, I expected sharp humour and it delivered.
This is definitely a show I wish more people watching. I have been recommending it to everyone because I selfishly need more people to talk about it with.
Here’s to hoping it gets renewed for a third season!
